About Umami

Umami is a blog about food from a Chinese-Canadian perspective. Based in southern Ontario, this blog is designed to be a guide to good* food, whether it’s from a restaurant or your own kitchen.

In this blog, I will showcase some wonderful food you may be afraid to order, restaurants you didn’t know exist, and dishes you can prepare with ease. I hope to dispel ‘fear’ surrounding some foods and ingredients, and get the readers of this blog to expand their palette and try food outside of their comfort zone. There will be occasional rants about awful food.

This blog will be updated weekly on Saturdays. Make sure to come back every week!

About the name (according to Wikipedia)

Umami is the one of the five basic tastes, aside of sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness. It’s that certain ‘je nais se quoi’ that makes food delicious. Because of it’s subtlety and complexity, it’s the least known of the five basic tastes. In Chinese, umami is known as , literally translated as ‘fresh flavour’. It’s abundant in ‘savory’ products such as meat, cheese, and mushroom.

*By no means do I mean healthy when I say good! I don’t count calories when I eat, nor do I care much about sugar/fat or daily servings. My main criteria for good food is freshness, flavour, and texture. I realize there’s a lot more to healthy/good eating, so if you have suggestions or comments about my posts please address it as a comment! I love feedback!
